Why we came up with this idea?

Nowadays, most white-collar workers’ daily work is accomplished by using computers for prolonged periods of time. Sitting for too long is harmful to health. Also, bad body posture might result in Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) even with such low physical workload.

What is MSDs?

Musculoskeletal Disorders or MSDs are injuries and disorders that affect the human body's movement or musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs, blood vessels, etc.).

Impact and common types of MSDs

Sick leave/absence from work; severity of injury and functional impairment; and medical costs and early retirement.

Pain in the upper extremity, neck pain and irritated eyes were frequently mentioned by white collars, in particular neck and shoulder complaints.

In the process of Desk Work

Target group research

We did the research by observed and interviewed the routine of white-collar workers from different field.

Design Opportunities

Reducing the time periods of sitting and correcting the posture in the meantime could prevent muscle problems. In the interval of work, the design itself will remind the workers of doing some particular stretches to relax the muscle.

Ideation

Our idea is a T-shirt with monitoring sensors that we can wear on. On the one hand, it could remind us keep correct posture. On the other hand, it can control the time period we are seated and guide us to do some stretches that help relax our muscles.

It works by vibrating at fixed time interval and at specific parts from neck to the lower back, user could only stop the vibration through completing certain stretches. The instructions are showed as follows.

Appearance design

Inspiration

Elitac’s high-tech wearable electronics: the electronics are small and behave like textiles, the electronic circuit is stretchable, the size of the stretchable circuit can vary from a small area up to covering a full garment.
