Background news story

Jiu-Liang Wang, director, started investigating the landfill pollution around Beijing in 2008. In 2011, he finished BEIJING BESIEGED BY WASTE, a set of photography work and a documentary with the same name. From 2012 to now, he has been working on the documentary PLASTIC CHINA, which became a blockbuster when premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in November of 2016. The documentary depicting the lives of two families who make their living recycling plastic waste imported from developed countries. They are just epitome of many other plastic workshops of China — the world factory. The film is considered to contribute to Chinese government’s permant ban of the foreign recycling waste in 2017.

When hundreds of countries around the world said they were “recycling” their plastic over the past few decades, half the time what they really meant was they were exporting it to another country. And most of the time, that meant they were exporting it to China. The 2017 ban, however, has left countries like the US and Japan scrambling for what to do with all the extra plastic waste. While countries like the US, the UK, and Germany will need to find new ways to deal with all this extra trash. The best option, according to Brooks, is to avoid using single-use items like plastic straws and cups in the first place. Opting for reusable bottles and bags can reduce the amount of plastic trash produced every year.

Threats and Opportunities

It is universally acknowledged that technology innovates the way people get information. People throughout the world read news via multiple media: texts, graphics, images, audio, animation or video. however, technology itself is a double-sided sword. Media in today confront sever challenges. I used this news case to explore how the event is reported and how major factors like technology, political power, commercial interest pose threat to media.

Findings

When relying on online products for news reading, people often don’t do in-depth reading. Also, media in China endurer severe censorship, therefore subtle methods of presenting information are supposed to tackle sensitive issues. Newsgame will be a way out.

Inspiration: Newsgame

Academic research and current work

“Newsgames: Journalism at Play,” written by Newsgame innovators Ian Bogost, Simon Ferrari, and Bobby Schweizer, is one of comprehensive research in this field, which categorized Newsgame into several genres: long-form documentary, real-world system simulations, interactive infographics and electronic literature or quiz based games.

Also, some websites provide Newsgames like Newsgame, Robin Kwong.

Why are the existing Newsgames not popular?

1. Some use the format of the game but show little interaction.

2. Some don’t generate desire to find more about the news topic.

For instance,The Newsgames Syrian Journey or Madrid covering news event Syrian’s conflict and terror happened in Madrid, Spain, don’t dig up into the news story and fail to present more information concerning the news.

3. Media does not explore wide design options to make products.
Media products are probably not the preference for designers to employ design methods, as the classic format of media, texts with images is so fundamental. In China, due to the state-owned nature of media, media of all kinds don’t embrace wide range of design options in their new media products.
